I think the idea of inerrancy arose as a counter to the ideas being presented in modernism, that nothing sticks on the wall when examined. Contra that, inerrancy says too much, that everything sticks on the wall, except for 1000s of exception cases explained in books. I prefer to say what Scripture claims, that Scripture is inspired by God and authoritative for one's active faith.

If there are errors in the Bible, then the implications for our faith and for who God is--or if He even exists--are megalithic. If God is not capable of protecting His word through the ages, then is He truly all-powerful? How does a great Bible scholar reconcile his scholarly findings with the belief in an almighty God, or with the belief that the Bible is actually a divinely inspired document? Is it really? What does all this say about the foundation of Christian faith? That foundation seems to be a foundation on sand--if Dr. Licona's assertions are true. Is the good Doctor working to support the Christian faith or to destroy its very foundations?

It's not a matter of if. Copyist errors have occurred through millenia. Perfect preservation has always been a fib, but we have sufficient preservation to hold onto our faith.

Depends on what your faith is in. Is it in God's word, or is it in doctrines that humans have taught you? This kind of discussion ought to force us back to God's word, to see what it actually teaches. Then we can compare that with what people teach, and see when human teaching falls short or is itself in error. As for your question about God "protecting" his word, it's not that he isn't capable of doing so; it's that he hasn't chosen to do so. (If by "protecting" his word, you mean keeping humans from making mistakes when they make copies of the original manuscripts, and then keeping other humans from making mistakes when they copy _those_ copies.) For God to "protect" his word from those errors, he would have to control every person who ever copied a manuscript, and take away their ability to make errors. Has God ever said that this is what he did? No, he hasn't. Some people may claim that that's what happened, but there's no basis for the claim. God doing so would also be inconsistent with his interaction with humans since he first created us. He made us to possess and express agency, which is one way in which we're made in his image. As a result, he doesn't keep us from sinning, much less from making innocent mistakes. To do so would result in us being automatons, not human beings. So God allows us to make mistakes while placing the responsibility for those mistakes upon us. It's no different when he allows humans to make copies of the original manuscripts, or copies of those copies. Not everyone who wrote those copies was even a Christian (in the biblical sense). To claim that God kept all of them from making errors is anti-factual, and also not something the Bible ever claims for itself. The fact is that we don't have the original manuscripts, we have copies of copies of the original manuscripts. And they differ from one another the same way any written record would that's been copied by hand. Copyist errors (and sometimes intentional editing) are a fact with the transmission of any document. We can in almost every instance determine which of the variations reflects the original writing, with a fair degree of confidence. And this allows us to determine what the originals said, to a great extent. There is no foundational Biblical truth that's in danger of being lost due to errors. So no, none of this threatens the foundation of our faith. Unless your faith is in the unbiblical idea that God kept people from making mistakes as they copied the Scriptures through the ages. Now, I'm not necessarily supporting Mike's definition of inerrancy, because he hasn't really explained what it is.

When the new testament was written, it was written by eye witness, and not by people like Mel Gibson or anyone like him. That Muslemis trying to confuse the real bible with movie story writer's. They don't care if the story of the Lord Jesus is told correctly or not, so long as they make millions of dollars. People are not equal to Jesus, Jesus is the son of God which makes him God.

Mel Gibson is a movie actor, he only made the movie of the crucifixion to make money from the movie. So if you ask, was jesus the one on the cross, or Jesus didn't appear to the disiples in the bodily form, the son of God can appear in front of any one in spirit or bodily form at any time he wishes to. Because he is the son of God.

So… eliminating all the nebulous verbiage by this speaker… if god’s hand can alter the laws of nature that’s the exact same thing as god overriding the laws of nature. Stop splitting hairs. And there is no and never has been ANY reliable evidence that god exists and that god can interfere with the laws of nature. None !! Except the words of certain people bound to start a new religion because history has revealed that’s one of the best ways to squeeze money and other resources out of emotionally desperate people. Religion is BIG business. So much so America has become the Mecca of absurdities. A nation of desperate people concocting stories of desperation. And how to avoid desperation… replace it with delusion.

Muslims believe in Judgement Day, or yawm al-din, which is a fundamental aspect of their faith. On this day, Allah will judge people for their actions in life and decide how they will spend their afterlife. Muslims believe that when they die, they will remain in their graves until Judgement Day, when they will be resurrected and brought before Allah. An angel named Israfil will announce the Day of Judgement by blowing a trumpet, and the bodies of the dead will gather on the plain of Arafat. This stated, if Shabir Ally didn't believe that Jesus was resurrected from the dead...does he deny the fundamental aspect of their faith in which his religion promotes on the topic?

Although this debate was reasonably conducted by "educated people"...I must admit it falls short of the reality that God created the universe, Earth and ultimately Mankind for a specific reason which had NOTHING to do with both religions. According to 1 John 3:8: "Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil." Relative to this Scripture, (2) vitally important issues were not addressed during the debate: 1. What is SIN? 2. What does the significance of Son of God's appearance "to destroy the works of the devil" hold? Most believe Jesus came to create the religious following known as, "Christianity." This view is refuted by this passage. It states He appeared "to destroy the works of the devil" "for the devil has been sinning from the beginning." This indicates SIN is not religious; it's LEGAL. Scripture tells us it is the violation of "Divine Law." The edict from Heaven's Court specifies, "ALL have sinned and fallen short of the Glory (legal standard) of God." The ONLY remedy for this violation is DEATH; the shedding of Blood. My Muslim friend fails to understand the legal requirement for the SIN and my Christian Brother failed to adequately expose him to the fact that "the Son of God" appeared to destroy the works of the devil. It was he who introduced LAWLESSNESS (the practice of SIN) into the material realm. As an eternal issue, If Jesus had NOT appeared for this purpose SIN (which started in the heart of this rogue eternal being; infecting the material realm) would have gone on FOREVER corrupting everything eternally; left unchecked. Since blood was required to destroy the works of the devil, the following Scripture carries major purpose in the appearing of the Son of God: “Indeed, under the LAW almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins” (Heb. 9:22). For this reason the Son of Gods appearance was necessary... to satisfy the LAW and legally address the SINS of the world (John 3:16). Add to this, He was NOT a violator of Divine Law, but willfully became the Lamb of God to take away the infractions of our SIN. This satisfied the legal requirement of death through the shedding of blood under the LAW. BECAUSE HE WAS FOUND "NOT GUILTY" according to Heaven's Court, His life had to be judiciously restored based on the "Law of Reparation" devised to repair that which was broken. He didn't SIN therefore under the this provision under the LAW He wasn't supposed to die. The Resurrection of Jesus from the dead is proof that God (the True Judge) did not allow this innocent Man to stay in the grave after He laid down His life for Mankind as the First born of the Family of God.

Do physicists believe that the laws of nature are not able to be violated? No, the "laws of physics" are provisional. They change as we get more information. The laws of physics are not derived from pure logic and so must necessarily be true for all eternity. They are reverse engineering equations that we use because the so far seem to work. Miracles do not violate the laws of nature; they are consistent with the true laws of nature that we don't understand yet.
